Project Deep Dive
Cross stitch fabric sizing involves a surprisingly precise calculation: the pattern dimensions (in stitch count), the fabric count (stitches per inch), the number of threads per stitch (coverage), and the extra fabric needed for framing all interact to determine the final fabric size. Get it wrong by even an inch and the finished piece will not fit the intended frame — a costly mistake when a project takes hundreds of hours to complete.
The craft supplies company had been offering a downloadable Excel spreadsheet as a customer resource, but the download-and-calculate workflow created friction. Customers had to save the file, open it in Excel (or hope Google Sheets rendered it correctly), enable macros for the validation logic, and then figure out which cells to edit. Many customers simply emailed the support team instead, creating a steady stream of repetitive sizing inquiries.
We converted the spreadsheet into a lightweight, embeddable web calculator designed to match the Bee's Botanics brand aesthetic — warm earth tones, a rustic texture palette, and friendly typography that feels at home on a craft supplies website. The calculator walks users through each input: pattern width and height in stitches, fabric count selection from a dropdown of common options (14-count Aida, 18-count, 28-count evenweave, etc.), coverage type, and desired framing margin. Results display the required fabric dimensions in both inches and centimeters.
The technical conversion was straightforward, but the UX design required careful thought about the target audience. Cross stitch enthusiasts range from beginners who do not know what "fabric count" means to experts who work on 32-count linen. We added contextual help tooltips for each input field and sensible defaults that produce valid results even if a beginner just enters their pattern dimensions and clicks calculate. The widget format allows the calculator to be embedded on any product page, so customers can size their fabric right next to the purchase button.
Technologies Used
"Our customers love it. They used to call us constantly asking what size fabric they needed. Now they use the calculator and order with confidence. Returns for wrong-size fabric have almost disappeared."
