CBD Dosage Calculator
A health and wellness calculator that determines appropriate CBD dosage recommendations based on body weight, reason for use, and product concentration specifications - designed for a CBD product company to embed on their e-commerce site.
The Challenge
The client had a complex Excel formula sheet that calculated CBD dosages based on multiple factors - body weight, condition severity, product concentration, and administration method. They needed this converted into a customer-facing tool that could be embedded directly on their Shopify store.
The Solution
We built a clean, modern web calculator with an intuitive form interface. Users select their parameters and instantly receive personalized dosage recommendations with clear safety messaging. The app includes input validation and error handling to ensure accurate medical-adjacent calculations.
Results & Impact
The embedded calculator increased average time on product pages by 2.5 minutes and contributed to a 15% increase in conversion rate for the CBD product line within the first month.
Key Features
Body weight-based calculations
Condition-specific dosing
Product concentration inputs
Safety validation checks
Clean medical-grade UI
Embeddable widget design
Project Deep Dive
This project required careful attention to both technical accuracy and compliance. Presenting a body-weight-based dosage recommendation on a public product page meant the calculation had to be exactly right, and the wording around it had to make clear this was a personal starting point, not medical advice - a balance the original Excel tool never had to strike, since it lived on one internal spreadsheet, not the open web.
What the spreadsheet did
The delivered build's own result panels label each computed figure as a "Formula," a strong sign the original Excel sheet worked the same way, cell by cell. A single input area captured the customer's body weight alongside a kg/lbs toggle, and a small table of three ascending multiplier constants stood in for "mild," "medium," and "strong" dosage intensity, so weight times the selected intensity factor produced a base milligram figure. From there, separate conversion formulas divided that same base dose by a potency-to-volume ratio for each delivery format the client sold - tincture drops, edible pieces, or a ready-to-drink beverage - since each format needed its own mg-per-unit math to land on a usable serving size.
How we converted it
We ported every formula the spreadsheet's "Formula:" labels described, preserving the same order of operations rather than re-deriving them from scratch. The weight input carries a kg/lbs toggle; selecting lbs multiplies the entered value by the standard 0.453592 conversion constant before it reaches the dosage formula, and the field label updates to match. Dosage intensity is a three-position segmented control - mild, medium, strong - with an animated fill bar, and changing it after a result is already showing triggers an instant recalculation rather than requiring another button press. Product format is handled as three tabs (oil, edible, drink), each exposing only the input fields its formula needs - potency and bottle size for oil, mg-per-piece for edible, potency and container size for drink - with every numeric field validated as a required positive number and reset to a clean state whenever the customer switches tabs. Results round to practical precision - one decimal place for the milligram and volume figures, a whole number for the oil dropper's drop count - and each is displayed alongside the literal formula used to reach it, so a customer or the client's support team can see exactly how the number was produced instead of trusting a black box. The reason-for-use selector changes the result heading's icon and wording but deliberately does not alter the math - a safety-conscious choice that keeps the tool from implying it prescribes condition-specific dosing.
What changed for the client
For the client's e-commerce team, this replaced an internal-only Excel tool with a public-facing widget embedded directly on their Shopify product pages - the exact deployment the original spreadsheet was never built for. Customers who previously had to email the company asking how much CBD to take can now get a personalized, format-specific answer - drops, gummies, or a bottled drink - without leaving the product page, addressing the recurring support question the client's testimonial called out directly. Because every recommendation carries its own transparent formula and safety framing rather than a bare number, support staff can also point hesitant customers to the same on-page tool with confidence.
Technologies Used
"Our customers used to email us asking about dosages. Now they use the calculator on our site and add products to their cart immediately. It's our best-performing page for conversions."
