Project Deep Dive
UK corporation tax sits at the intersection of personal and business finance in ways that confuse even experienced business owners. The original Excel workbook attempted to untangle this by calculating corporation tax liability, personal income tax on salary drawn, employer and employee National Insurance contributions, dividend tax at various bands, and Benefits in Kind tax implications — all from a handful of inputs. The spreadsheet had grown over years of UK tax law changes, with formulas referencing different tax year thresholds scattered across multiple sheets.
The conversion challenge was preserving the accuracy of 15+ interdependent tax calculations while presenting them in a way that actually made sense to non-accountants. In the Excel version, users had to understand which sheet to look at for which answer. We consolidated everything into a single-page web application where 10 clearly labeled input fields — company profit, PAYE salary, pension contributions, benefits in kind value, and dividend amounts — produce a comprehensive tax breakdown instantly.
The results section uses color-coded cards to group related outputs: company-level taxes in one color, personal taxes in another, and combined totals in a third. Each output shows both the absolute amount and the effective percentage rate, giving users an intuitive sense of their overall tax burden. The BIK calculations were particularly complex to convert, as the Excel version used lookup tables for different benefit types with Class 1A NIC implications that vary by tax year.
The accountant who commissioned this tool now uses it as a consultation aid — clients adjust the salary-vs-dividend split in real-time during meetings and immediately see how it affects their total tax liability. This interactive approach replaced what used to be a back-and-forth email exchange where the accountant would run scenarios in Excel and send PDF screenshots of the results.
